Denise Philpot reviews My Lucky Life In and Out of Show Business by Dick Van Dyke.
Popular entertainer Van Dyke takes us through his eventful life. In his late teens, he was deejaying a radio show in his hometown, Danville, Illinois. Ten years later, he was signed to a seven-year contract with CBS, which had him, among other assignments, emceeing test episodes of a new game show, The Price Is Right. Then, in fairly rapid succession came Bye Bye Birdie, the stage musical for which Van Dyke won a Tony Award; The Dick Van Dyke Show, for which he won Emmys in three succeeding years; and Mary Poppins, the Disney film that made him a star around the world. He is frank about his post-Dick Van Dyke Show years, during which he struggled to find a new direction for his career and came to terms with his alcoholism. He says he set out to write "the kind of book I think people want from me," and he's done just that. It's a celebrity memoir that reminds us of why we like the man so much and why we'll always stay tuned for another rerun of the The Dick Van Dyke Show.

Event Title: Adult Book Discussion: We Need to Talk About Kevin
Where: Grant Room
Monday, January 9, 2012
Time: 11:00 AM Central
|
|
The adult book discussion features We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver.
In a series of brutally introspective missives to her husband, Franklin, from whom she is separated, Eva tries to come to grips with the fact that their 17-year-old son, Kevin, has killed seven students and two adults with his crossbow. Guiltily she recalls how, as a successful writer, she was terrified of having a child. Was it for revenge, then, that from the moment of his birth Kevin was the archetypal difficult child, screaming for hours, refusing to nurse, driving away countless nannies, and intuitively learning to "divide and conquer" his parents? When their daughter, loving and patient Celia, is born, Eva feels vindicated; but as the gap between her view of Kevin as a "Machiavellian miscreant" and Franklin's efforts to explain away their son's aberrant behavior grows wider, they find themselves facing divorce. In crisply crafted sentences that cut to the bone of her feelings about motherhood, career, family, and what it is about American culture that produces child killers, Shriver yanks the reader back and forth between blame and empathy, retribution and forgiveness. Never letting up on the tension, Shriver ensures that, like Eva, the reader grapples with unhealed wounds. - Deborah Donovan (Booklist)

Event Title: Film: The Help
Where: Grant Room
Friday, January 13, 2012
Time: 1:00 PM Central
|
|
Based on one of the most talked about books in years and a #1 New York Times best-selling phenomenon, "The Help" stars Emma Stone ("Easy A") as Skeeter, Academy Award®-nominated Viola Davis ("Doubt") as Aibileen and Octavia Spencer as Minny-three very different, extraordinary women in Mississippi during the 1960s, who build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project that breaks societal rules and puts them all at risk. From their improbable alliance a remarkable sisterhood emerges, instilling all of them with the courage to transcend the lines that define them, and the realization that sometimes those lines are made to be crossed-even if it means bringing everyone in town face-to-face with the changing times. Deeply moving, filled with poignancy, humor and hope, "The Help" is a timeless and universal story about the ability to create change. (videoeta.com)

In the mid-1800's, the wealthy Sloper family - widowed surgeon Dr. Austin Sloper, his adult daughter Catherine Sloper (Dr. Sloper's only surviving child), and Dr. Sloper's recently widowed sister Lavinia Penniman - live in an opulent house at 16 Washington Square, New York City. They have accrued their wealth largely through Dr. Sloper's hard work. Despite the lessons that Dr. Sloper has paid for in all the social graces for her, Catherine is a plain, simple, awkward and extremely shy woman who spends all her free time alone doing embroidery when she is not doting on her father. Catherine's lack of social charm and beauty - unlike her deceased mother - is obvious to Dr. Sloper, who hopes that Lavinia will act as her guardian in becoming more of a social person, and ultimately as chaperon if Catherine were ever to meet the right man. The first man ever to show Catherine any attention is the handsome Morris Townsend. (imdb.com)

Friday, January 27, 2012
Time: 1:00 PM Central

|
Documentary. "Your horse is a mirror to your soul, and sometimes you may not like what you see. Sometimes, you will." So says Buck Brannaman, a true American cowboy and sage on horseback who travels the country for nine grueling months a year helping horses with people problems. Buck a richly textured and visually stunning film, follows Brannaman from his abusive childhood to his phenomenally successful approach to horses. A real-life "horse-whisperer", he eschews the violence of his upbringing and teaches people to communicate with their horses through leadership and sensitivity, not punishment. In this film, the animal-human relationship becomes a metaphor for facing the daily challenges of life. A truly American story about an unsung hero, Buck is about an ordinary man who has made an extraordinary life despite tremendous odds. (videoeta.com)
